Projector has now been acting up for the last 2 weeks, ill be using it as i usually do when suddenly the screen goes black, power turns off on projector, noticed the power and temp lights are solid red when this occurs which tells me its getting too hot and turning off to prevent damage. Have only had a little over 2 months, spent almost $1000 on this thing and its already having problems?? Contacted ben q because surely its still under manufacturer Warranty, customer service was ok at best, not really helpful, told me he would send an email with 2 forms to fill out and send back, simple enough right? Well, took a look at these forms, the email says download, fill out on your computer, email back, well im a computer knowledgable guy but these are pdf files and i didnt even know how to fill them out on my computer, nor could i figure out, had to print, hand fill them out, and take a pic with phone. Its kind of ridiculous i have to jump through all these hoops just to send a really expensive item i purchased in for repair only after 2 months. I figured when i called the guy would get my info, model, and send me a shipping label, not even....... havent sent in yet, too busy trying to figure out the process, but will soon because what its doing is unacceptable for the amount spent. Hoping these guys are good on fixing if not exchanging the item, we'll see, will post back, but until then changing rating to a 3 star, because it was great for the whole 2 months it worked for, will change if situation is corrected.
Edit : 10/11/2015
Projector has gotten back and in perfect working order once again, fingers crossed there isnt anymore issues with it in the near future. Let me say ben q has awesomely quick repair service, sent out on a monday, got to them late friday, was sent back to me on monday, not sure when they even had the time to work on it! It was so fast i had to wonder if anything was even repaired, so i called, this is where things went a little whacky, again the customer service was a littly iffy, they only sent an email stating it was being sent back to me, no phone call, not a word what was fixed. When i got connected to a customer service rep, the woman wasnt the most helpful, i simply told her i was curious what had been done and if she could help me out, gave her my info, her reply was that it didnt say under my account, and she wasnt sure, i asked if i could talk to someone in tech support that could help me out, she made it sound like that wouldnt help me out, i persisted on how then could i find out, finally she says let me see if i can find out for you and puts me on hold. Eventually she comes back and says ok sir they replaced the thermal fan and updated the firmware, phew at last an answer! Lol i can say that ben q has superb products, amazingly fast repair, but the customer service needs a little work, i barely was able to find out something basic, what was worked on, and this is from a top tier company at that, but aside from that very satisfied customer, thank you ben q, changing rating back to 5 star!
PROS:
Excellent picture quality
Great color reproduction
Superb 3D performance
CONS:
Generates a lot of heat
Noisy fan operation
Keystone resets upon power-off
Some motion stutter present in fast scenes
I do have a couple of cons; not big enough of a deal to me to warrant lower it anything less than 5 stars. Simply because I don't find them to be an inconvenience nor a big deal... They are-
1st-Audio volume level is quite horrible, it has 10 levels; 1-10. At 1 it is just a little too quiet however at 2 its simply too loud. So of course who cares about this since most likely anyone buying this projector has a home theater audio system such as myself.
2nd-The option to be able to move the picture image left, right, up, and down is only available when a PC cable is connected to the projector. So while that is fine in itself however it does not save your screen position setting when adjusting it in PC and then switching to another video source. I consider this to be typical and a to be expected item; which ultimately doesn't matter either because I highly doubt anyone would hook this projector up with a VGA cable. I simply use DVI to HDMI and it works perfectly well.
3rd-This is probably to most noticeable and my biggest "ah that sucks" moment with this projector. I have 2 HDMI hooked up to it; one for TV and one for my HTPC. When I set the screen size to be perfect for my HTPC input (fills the 135" screen perfectly) and then I switch over to watch TV - the screen is too big and it projects about a 136"-137" image so you have to adjust the zoom and re-tweak things a little bit to make the TV fit perfectly in the 135". I did also notice this when hooking up the XBOX One and watching a BluRay but a minute level. So; switching between the 2 HDMI sources seems to have small screen display size differences(?). So again ultimately this is not a big deal at all for me since I use the HTPC input 95% of the time and the projector is very easy to access if I ever wanted to get the TV display perfect; but when watching local news who cares about tiny over spray? I did not lower the review of the projector any for this item because I very easily could be doing something wrong and also I'm not testing it under typical world conditions; meaning I don't have an HDMI receiver and running all video sources through the HDMI receiver. I'm whiling to be under that condition you would not notice this problem; just a hunch though.
4th-And last. The two knobs for zoom and focus. The zoom knob has a nice extended little knob on it making it very easy to twist and get precision accuracy. My complaint is that the focus knob does NOT have this same knob which kind of sucks. When twisting the focus wheel it tends to "jump" because its a little stiff to turn and when turning it; it requires enough pressure that it'll move the projector resulting in getting the focus perfect kind of a- hmm well I think that's as good as it can get experience. Again a rather lame complaint and really not anything worth lower the score of the projector over IMO.
I do highly recommend this projector and it has been shown of to quite a few people that are completely blown away with the image quality. Typically the comment back is; this is way nicer looking that a movie theater and guess what; I'm inclined to agree. Image is impressive straight out of the box and I'm sure it still can even be improved upon with calibration.
I don't do the whole 3D "thing" so I can't comment on that.
Other thoughts - No vertical adjustment screw like the NON short throw model. No idea why this is; I'd assume its a construct-ability thing because it was the same thing with the previous models of these two projectors. There is a built-in screen adjuster that did work; though I just like the screen adjuster method...
Top reviews from other countries
While I don't use it, the built in speaker is surprisingly loud and clear - I tried it out fully expecting a horrible sound but even friends agreed it was not bad (ie. if main speakers broke I would be okay with using the built in ones until the mains were fixed).
