I'm not sure what they'd replace it with... It's a run-of-the-mill Dell professional monitor, USB ports are already there, tilt/swivel/rotate stand is already there. I think the next step is bezel-less or near-bezel-less, but I would imagine those starting at $600 or more for the 24". Too, 4K doesn't have a huge adoption at this point in time. Still very niche.

Just a better panel really. They have just updated their 24inch and 25inch P and Ultra sharp monitors with new models that have better panels. More evenly lit, wider gamut etc. I'm wondering if the 4K will get the switch some point soon. (Also HDMI 2.0 would be nice)

True, there's room for improvement.. I don't think any Macs have HDMI 2.0 yet even, but that would definitely be nice, I'd rather not be using my limited Thunderbolt ports for non-thunderbolt displays.

I've got a rMBP 15", 2012, and am trying to connect it to a P2415Q, and get "retina" quality at 51hz. Plugging it in with with MST off, I get retina-quality 1080@30hz. No matter what settings I try in SwitchResX, I always get "configuration invalid". Could anybody please post a photo of their configuration? I've tried what was previously suggested in this thread (510 pixel clock, at 3840x2160, which results in ~51hz), but that didn't work. I then tried all 4 of the simplified settings: GTF, CVT, CVT-RB, and CVT-RB v2, none of which worked. I've probably spent like 10h searching this thread and trying rebooting my computer, which has gotten quite frustrating.

I'm guessing that the problem probably lies with the front / back porch, sync width, and blanking? Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks so much!

As the title says, I ordered a Dell P2715Q and plan to run it next to my RetinaMacBookPro 15" mid 2015.
My plan is to use the display port to run it. Are there any known issues or will it just run fine at 4k @60hz ?

Thanks

In a little world of my own
I finally got my P2715Q and have a few questions:

1. Calibration - Out of box was ok but did not match the thunderbolt display I have, I have calibrated with the "Expert Mode" calibration, but still seems a little but "yellow" compared to my TB Display. Any ideas?
2. I am running at "2560x1440 HiDpi" mode, what are others running at? I kind of like it like this as it is still sharp and the desktop space matches the TB display.
3. I am getting 4k res at 60Hz (3840x2160 @ 60Hz) with SST on my late 2013 rMBP (with nVidia GFX). Is that optimal config?
4. Any other settings I should change "out of the box"
5. I have 1 dead (not stuck/bright) pixel, will Dell replace it? I got it via B&H.

Although the factory default calibration is good, if you want to match prints or ensure that those viewing your images online look like what you are seeing on your display, you need to go through a true hardware calibration and not just the system calibration. A hardware calibration device will set your brightness/contrast, white point, and create a calibration curve so that your display matches a standard.

I purchased a Color Munki Display about a week ago, and calibrated both my P2715Q display and my MBP retina display. When placed side-by-side, they are incredibly close, and perhaps the only difference is due to the difference in screen surface finish (glossy vs. matte).

I have not yet tried to match prints yet. That is my next goal - to get my displays to match prints from a good lab.

I use 1920X1080; the 2560X1440 requires me to lean forward too much to see. Of course, I have 51 year old eyes, so that may make a difference!

Edited to add - I purchased mine during a factor $20 rebate period. The rebate is on until 2/29/16, so hurry if you want one. I also got extremely lucky in that for some reason Adorama had this listed for $124 a week ago for only a few hours. It's usually $164, with many online retailers offering $144 from time to time. I had been watching prices for a month and for some reason Adorama was low that day.

I sure hope so. I am using a Late '13 rMBP to do 4K on a Dell UP2414Q.

I just ordered the P2415Q and have the same late '13 rMBP. I wonder if running it at 52hz will be okay - I may also consider running it at 2560 x 1440. Otherwise I may have to upgrade the Mac :( We'll see when it arrives.

Why 52Hz? Usually the faster the refresh, the smooth the appearance with less eye strain. As for replacing a 2013 rMBP, that is only when, not if. Let's alls see what Mac rolls out for the Skylake models. If we are lucky, TB3 and USB 3.1 using USB-C ports, DDR4 memory, more powerful GPU....and other goodies. And just maybe the OS will have Siri for Mac.

As I understand it, for 13 inch models only the early 2015 rMBP and newer support 4k @ 60hz. Do you know of anyone running the late 2013 @ 60hz on an external 4k?

Does anyone have any comments regarding the Dell P2415q and an early 2015 13" rMBP? So far all I've been able to find is people running on it on Yosemite saying the graphics are choppy. I just wonder if under El Capitan it's gotten a lot better or is it still pretty bad?

Hey guys,

I've read countless threads on external montiors and 4k/Retina MacBooks, yet I still manage to not understand my current options. Would love some advice!

My setup:
13'' rMBP, Late 2013
16GB RAM
i5, 2.6Ghz
Iris 5100
Running OS X El Capitan

Requirements: I want to be able to run an external monitor alongside my rMBP, which will be mostly running Windows (Parallels Desktop). Does that complicate things?

Current understanding of the situation:
My current understanding is that I won't be able to run 4K/UHD @ 60hz. The most (I think) I've read is 4K/UHD @ 52hz (?). But my question is if I scale down the resolution a notch, would I be able to get @ 60hz? I'm talking specifically about the Dell P2415Q.

I'm not (currently) doing any graphics work or gaming, just some office/online stuff. So true Retina/UHD is not a MUST, but wondering how much under that I will have to go in order to get 60hz.

Also, any other issues that we know of with the P2415Q? If I'm not going to get 4K@60hz, am I better getting the 27'' version?

Appreciate your help!

I just got my DELL P2715Q yesterday. Plugged in the Display to mini display port cable and it worked right out of the box. Even at the 4k resolution at 60hz. No issues to report so far. Like it much better than the apple TBD.

The P2415q just arrived. It's the best panel I've had so far. Definitely retina quality as far as I can tell. I was able to get it to 60hz on my Windows machine. On my rMBP I can only output 30hz. It's usable but it is a bit choppy. Not as bad as I thought it would be but still bad.

Couldn't agree more! Best panel I have had so far! Got the 27" but they are essentially the same ;)

With Yosemite, even my 2013 (new) Mac Pro was choppy when running the P2715Q at higher resolutions (3k in HiDPI mode). It was most noticeable when using Mission Control to switch screens. The video now runs buttery smooth on El Capitan. I believe Apple rewrote the graphics code in El Capitan to take advantage of Metal, which gave it a big speed boost.
