The Pros:
The router is relatively easy to setup, and yet does not dumb things down to the point where advanced users cannot customize or tweak settings. The radio signal strength and coverage has so far been excellent, and having 2 5GHz bands is a huge plus. I have numerous IoT devices (chiefly IP cameras) in my home, and the AC3200 handles the bandwidth apportionment deftly - significantly improving throughput over my older linksys dual-band router. Dropouts are rare.
The router also allows you to create several "guest" networks - ideal for visitors or SOHO clients. By merely going through the setup process, the Asus allows you to separate LAN subnets with a check of a box - previously, I had to setup manual firewall rules on my DD-WRT flashed router, so this was a very nice and convenient feature.
Construction of the unit is heavy duty and it appears to be very well made. It is also a large, heavy monster, so find a nice stable place to put it. Port forwarding is very easy and logically arranged, as are most of the menu options. The software for this router is feature rich. It also has network monitoring functionality to prevent DDOS attacks and malware.
I had a strange problem during setup of this router where the wireless radios would not click on, and I called tech support fearing I had a bad unit. Tech support was surprisingly good, and a hard reset solved the problem - nice to know that you have good telephone support if you need it - it is a rare commodity nowadays.
The Cons:
I have had one occasion so far where the wireless radios have flicked themselves off. In that case, I was having an issue with a NAS device and had thought that by disconnecting the problem unit and rebooting that would clear my problem. It did, sort of, but for some reason the Asus decided to disable the wireless even after multiple reboots. If you run into this problem, go to the "Wireless" section of the menu, then select the "Professional" tab, and click "Enable Radio" for each of the bands. I am still puzzled as to why this happened, but am attributing it for now to a software glitch.
The original problem I had with the wireless during setup which necessitated a call to tech support started when I started using the setup wizard, realized I wanted to do a custom advanced setup, and then backtracked. This horked basically everything (which it shouldn't have). I went through the entire setup process, rebooted, and the wireless would not activate no matter what I did. This could only be solved by doing a hard reset, and starting the process over again, this time taking care to begin with the custom, manual advanced setup. Again, another quirky bug that disabled wireless.
I will update as my impressions of the unit continue to evolve, but for now I would give it 4-4.5 stars.
Update 1:
The unit has a built-in VPN which is really nice for connecting to your home network from remote locations. This enables you to connect via secure encrypted connection to the router VPN, and from there, you can access internal "privileged" locations.
The other really amazing feature I didn't realize it had when I bought it, is a traffic analyzer! With it, you can assess device and connection traffic, inbound or outbound. You can also parse by application type. It's great for determining which devices and connections are sucking bandwidth, or for monitoring your SOHO LAN for intrusions.
Update 2:
I've been please enough with the consistent performance and reliability of this unit to upgrade my rating to 5 stars.
Update 3:
I've had a chance to use the VPN now several times over the last few months, and have found it to be excellent. Rock solid, and very easy to setup and use. Mac users can connect using the OVPN file generated by Asus router during VPN setup and a free copy of Tunnelblick.
Update 4:
Still going strong and performing reliably in a SOHO setting for 18 months. Regular firmware updates have improved the reliability of the unit. I'm pleased that Asus has done such a good job of supporting their equipment.
Update 5:
I really appreciate ASUS's commitment to ongoing firmware support. The unit has only gotten more stable with each update. Excellent job ASUS, I would definitely by more networking products from you.
Pros:
Speed of wireless, unquestionably, off the charts good. My ISP brings in 300 Mbps down, I get it all on the 5G network, except when a fair distance from this router.
AP isolation. I was able to create a "guest network" in the wireless to allow guests to access the internet without giving them access to anything else. This was huge with my security strategy (private, public, and protected networks) and multiple VLANs setup behind it.
Web interface tools. These are some of the very best I have ever seen for consumer grade routers. While at times a little confusing, with a little monkeying around they are pretty easy to figure out.
Route configuration. Adding routes to subnets is quick and easy. I needed this and expected it, but was good to see it well supported.
Cons:
Buffer bloat is high when on LAN attached devices. It is low for wirelessly connected devices. I suspect this has a lot to do with device connection speeds. The LAN behind this router is Gig E. So I think this is being caused by connection speeds. If I had a little while to experiment I would nail this down.
Reboots for changes to the configuration. Any network changes you make to the router in its web-based management tools causes a reboot and everyone behind the router loses connectivity for a few minutes. While changes to the address of the router, its subnet mask, or default route out might make sense, many other changes do not.
Other notes:
I have Spectrum internet via Time Warner on cable. I was able to configure a DHCP lease for the Asus, then make it the designated DMZ device. This worked perfectly for getting my routes isolated in a way that got my requests made from devices behind the Asus back to it. Since DMZ devices that connect other devices contained in their own networks are open to the Internet, the NAT feature is very important here. Making the Asus my DMZ device kept it from going through the ISP routers NAT (no double NATting) while maintaining NAT security for my connected devices behind the Asus.
Initially, and for a few days after setting this router up, I assumed that the DHCP client was taking a really long time to re-establish the network address for clients after their DHCP leases expired. I assumed this because it was happening every hour and I had the DHCP leases set to expire after one hour. This turned out to be tied to a feature this router has to rotate WEP2 keys. I had initially left this at the default setting of rotating every hour. This is apparently not a common feature in consumer grade wireless routers. When the keys are rotated, all clients on the specific radio and frequency this is set for lose connectivity to the network for a couple of minutes (but stay connected to the router). I opted to disable this feature as it was causing a lot of confusion for non-technical users in my home. You can do the same by going to your wireless management section in the GUI and setting the "Group Key Rotation Interval" to 0. You will need to do this for the singular 2.4GHz radio and both 5GHz radios.
I absolutely love the web-based configuration tools, even with their relatively small list of limitations (this is a consumer grade device, I wasn't expecting a lot.) They are fast and responsive in a way that makes it easy to get into it, check currently connected devices, and make changes when needed. The traffic reporting was a nice bonus to find here with its pie charts and ability to monitor based on service type.
I run a video network (LAN) for a group of Tivo tuners and devices. This LAN needs to have local LAN based communication so they can all talk to each other, but I didn't want these devices exposed to potentially infected and maybe even dangerous trojan horses on the public devices. I was able to sequester these devices into their own LAN like I needed to, to protect them. Be aware, I also needed the same protection for my private network from even these Tivos (or I had to trust Tivo to maintain security updates for their own devices), which was accomplished using a Netgear managed switch behind the Asus.
My wife and I both work from home. She works for a defense contractor and I work for a networked services provider. We both needed to be able to ensure our employers of highest-grade security for our work PCs when using sensitive tools and handling sensitive data from our home network. The combination of this Asus router with its tooling and the Netgear managed switch behind it gave me a very clear and defensible way to do that while still maintaining connectivity (both wireless and wired) for both guests and devices I cannot control and need to protect.
Top reviews from other countries
This is a Dual-Core router with Asus-WRT. The rich router configuration panel allow for excellent control. There is an an Android App which allows you to quickly view and change settings. It has a in-built Antivirus as well. You can graphically see which household member's device is consuming most of your bandwidth!
The data-transfer between wireless-and wired devices is very fast as well. Connect a pen drive and it can doiwnload torrents onto it. Media on the pen-drive can be shared across devices. One point to note, in case you wish to use AiCloud functionality, over internet, the router must have its external IP directly exposed to the internet. In other words, the DSL modem has to be in bridge mode. I tried that for a few weeks and it worked beautifully but then I reverted for security and privacy reasons.
This router does have connection teaming with load balancing and failover modes but I faced many issues with that feature especially if one network goes down. So a dedicated load balance router has now been placed behind it to handle those duties.
The Wifi-AC network connectivity as expected has decent coverage and AC speeds are seen only if sitting in same or adjacent room. Any further and it reverts to wifi-N. In an ideal world, I would have purchased a router that gives me Wifi-AC connection all over my house but sadly such a router does not yet exist !
It is a beast but will be an overkill for most households.
Recomendado 100%
The issue from this seller if you're based in the UK is that the router is a US SKU and only comes with an American power supply. There are no UK or Euro adaptors included ( or indeed mentioned by the seller). The power supply itself is multi-voltage and I happened to have the necessary US to UK adaptor lying around so wasn't a major issue for me but others need to be aware if using this seller.
I bought this router to work with my BT Infinity 2 package to replace a BT Homehub 4. Luckily it's just a case of plugging the OpenReach modem into the routers WAN port and looging in the the BT credentials. For me they were bthomehub@btbroadband.com with a password of BT.
Range is much improved over the Homehub on both 2.4ghz and 5ghz bands I've been able to remove a second wireless ap that I was using to fill in some poor reception areas in the house.
Throughput on 2.4ghz is a match for the homehub but slightly down on the 5ghz band tested using my Oneplus One in the same location. It's not clear to me why this would be the case but this router does utilise two 5ghz networks so I suspect it will be much better at sustaining any rate as the number of clients increases versus the homehub.
It is rather large and somewhat imposing to look at, mine is in a study but I can imagine it looking somewhat out of place in a living room for example.
The set up is very simple and the gui is probably the best I've ever used in a router. I've had some issues with disconnects but overcame these by not using the smartconnect option for wireless and removing wpa key recycling option. Others have reported the same elsewhere with the same fix, I'm sure a later firmware update may see this fixed but I'm happy seeing separate networks anyway.
There are a complete myriad of options available from network attached storage to using 4g modem as a failover, it's all the router you'll ever need I'm sure.
